New perspectives for the Portuguese language

Nowadays, Portuguese is the sixth most widely spoken mother tongue on a global level, and the third most widely spoken European language, being an official language in eight countries in five continents - Portugal (with Azores and Madeira Islands), Brasil, Mozambique, Angola (with Cabinda), Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tomé and Príncipe and East-Timor -, the working language of twelve organisations, and being used daily by about 200 million human beings. Also is spoken in Goa, Damao and Diu in India, Malacca in Malaysia, and Special Administrative Region of Macau from China, which are all regions where segments of the population speak Portuguese or creoles with a lexical basis in Portuguese.

The Portuguese language is currently studied in Romania at the Bucharest and Constanta Universities, as well as at the Suceava University as an optional course. In high schools, Portuguese is studied in Bucharest (the "Eugen Lovinescu" High School), in Constanta (the "George Calinescu" High School), and in Cluj (the "Mihai Eminescu" High School). A total of over four hundred persons are currently studying Portuguese officially in Romania.

At the Faculty of Literature in the University of Bucharest where Portuguese has been taught since 1974 there is a Portuguese Language Center set up in April 2001 as a result of the partnership protocol concluded between the University and the Camoes Institute in Lisbon. This Center, provided with a large library, with audio, visual, and information materials: enables students and other interested persons excellent conditions to study and improve their knowledge of Portuguese language and culture; organizes activities (conferences, exhibitions, film cycles for students and other persons interested in Portugal's language and culture; coordinates and supports the Portuguese teaching activity in Romania.
